The Sunday Post
Heart-Shaped Raspberry Hand Pies, Dead Simple Phyllo Apple Roses, and Mom's Heart-Shaped Sprinkle Cookies
My newsletter this week is filled with all things looooove. It’s also Super Bowl weekend, along with Fat Tuesday and Valentine’s Day next week, so I feel like my recipes are perfectly aligned.
Healthy? No.
Meal prep? No.
Love?! Yes, yes, yes.
Yes, the heart shapes and romance even apply to the Super Bowl this year. Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere?!
As a mom, I always loved the little Valentine’s that my kids would bring home for me and I wish I did a better job of hanging on to them. You just accumulate so many things when kids are little, you have no idea what you’ll wish to see again when they grow up. Now they’re adults and celebrating in a different way with their own partners and friends.
Remember me? Remember when mom was your most important Valentine guys?
Even still, I like to celebrate the holiday by making and leaving treats for them. I know that even though they might roll their eyes and give a little smirk they secretly love my little gifts. One of my Valentines, who is currently living his best life Down Under, will be missing his love cookies from mom this year.
Speaking of cookies from mom, two of the recipes I’ve included here are from my mom and she’s been making treats for my brother and I for many many years (*ahem, 50*). We pined over the store bought snacks that other kids brought to school and it wasn’t until many years later that I was able to appreciate the home made goodness she gave to us as kids.
Delivered in the form of a heart-shaped cookie. Every single Valentine’s Day.
Every bake sale at school (remember when we could do those??), every special occasion, every weekend mom was baking something. And usually little old me was standing on a chair beside her. It really had such a huge impact on my love of baking and giving food gifts. Now, sometimes if I’m lucky I’ll get asked by my favourite 8 year old if he can bake with me. And so the love language of food continues.
Dang, love is grand isn’t it? And it comes in so many cool forms.
Well, I’m off to get ready to watch all the football love that’s going to happen today. Let’s be real though, I’m not cheering for anyone, I’m just in it for the snacks.
Have a great week everyone!

If you know me at all you know about my love of pie. I’d rather eat it over cake any day. We made these with my class for a Cafe they run on Fridays. We got rave reviews and surprisingly these only took a few minutes to whip up. We used store bought pastry sheets but these would be killer with some homemade pastry. What a sweet little gift for someone special. Yum.
